The nation said no to AV

So the country voted overwhelmingly against the Alternative Vote (AV) in the AV referendum.

The problem is that the new system could have actually worked quite well, Austrailia have had it for years. Surely we want to be represented by the MP’s that receive the majority of the votes even if the new system benefits the Lib Dems more as the party pushing it.

Spaceman thinks that most people did not really understand the implications and either voted no because Cameron told them to or because of the argument “if it ain’t broke…”.

Well truthfully it ain’t broke, but it could be fixed so much better….

  1. A great opportunity to fix an unfair voting sysyem has been missed. First-Past-The-Post breeds complacency in a lot of MPs who have safe seats. I’m one of the unlucky ones who lives in a constituency which has zero chance of changing hands any time in the next fifty years and as such I have what is effectively a wasted vote. Elections are decided by 100 or so marginal seats in middle England and sadly the rest of us don’t really matter.

  2. Yes Paul, a great opportunity missed.

Voter resentment, a lack of understanding of the benefits and anti Clegg sentiment seem to have spelled its doom.
